OBJECTIVE

Goal and Objective

EDUCATION

AWARENESS

Historic preservation and adaptive reuse is not a well-recognized practice in Japan, especially in rural region. Old-Hokuriku Bank Building (HB) building could become a very good case study for Inami and similar towns to learn about the importance in protecting cultural assets and altogether, finding a sustainable solution to the current situation.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE

INTL COLLABORATION

As part of due diligence, RISD Master-degree design students specializing in Architecture Adaptive Re-use will travel to Japan to conduct feasibility report and generate design concepts in revitalizing HB building.  This is an educational initiative that will initiate cultural exchange dialog between small town Inami and international design community, leveraging overseas creative talents for fresh ideas, promote sustainable design practice, and take local revitalization projects to a global level.

HISTORIC ARCHIVE

In Japan, data on historic buildings are typically scattered or lost. The design research group will deliver a survey report of HB building that can be archived by the local government or library.  The group will also deliver multiple conceptual design concepts with careful consideration on cultural relevancy and sustainability.  This will open dialogs for the local groups to explore new possibilities in re-purposing the building.

GOAL

Inami, Nanto City

  • Build awareness in preservation and protection of cultural assets

  • In alignment with regional government's effort in building “Japan’s model city” (Toyama, Takaoka, Johana alike). HB building could also become an important case study driving sustainable town planning and rural + cultural revitalization.

  • New activities to energize Inami, build township and town pride.

  • Build proper archive of historic architecture for city hall or library to keep.  (as most historic records are often lost or destroyed during war time).

  • Fresh eyes to deliver new ideas that can be leveraged in due diligence process for adaptive re-use.

  • (Town and Tourism PR) Gain international and media attention, and put Inami on the global map.

  • Bring social impact through creativity and sustainable, thoughtful design

  • Exposure to global social challenges

  • Cultural inspiration and immersion

  • Pioneer a social innovation travel platform

  • Set case-study reference & movement of town revitalization and adaptive-reuse for other Japanese rural towns to follow.

  • Real-life case study involving:

    • architectural/structural studies

    • historic and cultural research

    • town planning and revitalization

    • travel, craft experience
